As a national NGO in Cambodia, Buddhism for Development maintains a fundamental principle – the tenets of Buddhism should shape and motivate the manner in which the organization undertakes its work. Fundamentally BFD works with monks and donchees (as well as many others), encouraging them and supporting their efforts to be involved in the day-to-day lives of the communities where they serve. Buddhism has always been, and still is, central to the lives of Cambodians.
BFD believes that the Buddhism philosophy is to help humans based on the Buddha's well-known advice, "Venerables, please go to villages and communities and cities to express the Darma to a great deal of people for their advantage and for the peace (sokha) of many lives, including humans and devas".

BFD works in many remote communities. Even with todays hi-tech and wide reaching media, reaching and informing remote communities is difficult. BFD invests a lot in utilising Mobile Community Education Caravans,
Commonly BFD will travel to a village conduct information meetings during the day, and in the evening provide outdoor multimedia information and entertainment sessions. Typically hundreds of people will gather and learn messages on land law, human rights, health and welfare.
